I would like to take you through some easy steps while configuring, installing, training, and maintaining a buried wire (underground) pet fence, all at the same time saving you hundreds of dollars over a professionally installed  hidden fence.

I have watched the results of retail /self install / electronic fenced dogs over the years and I it is worth a try by an average or better handyman.  This can save several hundred dollars over an installation by the sponsors of this page.  :)

The sponsors all agree that IF you are going to do it yourself, we would rather you do it right, for your pet's sake!

Starting with a comparison of equipment, there are few parts to these systems- a transmitter that is mounted in your home, a receiver –collar that the dog wears around his neck, and the wire that is buried, and kept from damage by mother nature and your landscaper- The Transmitter simply converts alternating current from your home into Direct current which flows through the wire. Not much technology there, it just creates and adjusts the size of the signal field or in more simple terms , allows the dog to go only so far!  The receiver collar needs to be put on the dog correctly each time he goes out to play and perform some needed rituals.

For your wire needs, I suggest finding an electrical supplier who carries a polyetheline coated 16 gauge underground-rated ,not the stranded type it must be the solid wire to maintain an ohms rating that stays consistent over the years- (a little bit of electrical knowledge helps here) and beyond in maintaining the correct resistance in the wire.  Stranded wire is also far more difficult to find wire breaks if they occur.

Next, on to the install! You will be putting wire 3-6 inches or more in the ground .You’ll bury  all the way around the perimeter( check with local ordinances) BUT  be sure to call the 1 800 number before you dig, for the marking-out of buried utilities.

Also, locate all the sprinkler heads and lines so you do not add work to this process.

You can rent a machine at Home Depot  and many other handyman rental shops may carry this small trench maker, a simple doubling- up of cutting blades will  produce a nice cut into the lawn- one that will seal up nicely after a few rains again use the correct blades for this to get the clean end result.

Simply cut a line around the edge of the property and a line from that outer-loop, straight to the outside of the house , closest to where you have decided to mount the transmitter (directly inside).

Drill through the house there and be careful to miss any house wiring- all that is needed here is to remove the faceplate of the closest wall plug/ receptable inside the house, again closest to this point, to find the direction and flow of the house wiring.

Next, you want to produce the wire that will dually connect to the simple spring loaded connectors at the bottom of the transmitter, and to the outside at the outer loop or fence line.

Simply decide the length of this wire(to outer loop from underground dog fence transmitter . This wire will be called the null-signal wire. It  is twisted together  so that the dog is allowed free movement over it while playing and wearing his underground dog collar.  The perimeter still works, of course.

Simply wrapping the wire around a distant tree and putting both remaining ends (that are being held by you ) get a Powerful Drill and lock the two ends in the chuck down hard – and pull the trigger- the wire will twist together.  Use about 1/2 more wire length than you need, the twisting shortens it.

Bury this twisted wire from the to the outer loop area and bury the outer loop signal wire also- be sure to use waterproof connectors where needed.

Next, the visual border that will help the dog learn his safe-zone/ the flags  .They need to be 1-1.5 feet inside the signal zone, for proper association by the pet during his training……

The best advice you can get about installing your own fence is to call a local professional and lay it out for them.  Tell them cost is an issue and you want to do it yourself.  Many of these professionals will take the time to offer you help even if they are not selling you an installed fence.

And - even if you install it yourself, you can still get an American made pet fence because your pet does not deserve a China made product.
